Are iPhones really waterproof?

How do iPhones react to splashes?

Good question! Actually, technically, no. iPhones aren't completely waterproof . They're called water-resistant, meaning they can withstand certain levels of water exposure before being damaged.

It's important to understand that water resistance provides protection (under certain conditions and durations) but it does not make it waterproof. If you leave any iPhone in water long enough, it will be unusable forever !

Can you put your iPhone in water?

All iPhones are water resistant, starting with the iPhone 7. Subsequent models do not have the same water resistance (IP) rating . To determine this, they are tested for their ability to be submerged to varying depths and for varying lengths of time.

Here is a list detailing the water resistance capabilities (their IP rating, the depth to which they can be submerged, and the length of time they can withstand that depth) according to iPhone models :

1/ IP67 protection rating according to IEC 60529 ( maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes ). They can withstand accidental spills and brief immersion, but they are not designed for swimming or underwater photography:

  • iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

2/ IP68 protection index according to IEC 60529 standard ( maximum depth of 2 meters for a maximum of 30 minutes ):

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone XS and XS Max

3/ IP68 protection index according to IEC 60529 standard (maximum depth of 4 meters for a maximum of 30 minutes ):

  • iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max

4/ IP68 protection rating according to IEC 60529 ( maximum depth of 6 meters for a maximum of 30 minutes ). These models are robust enough to withstand most accidental encounters with water:

  • iPhone15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone13, 13 Mini, 13 pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 pro Max

Models prior to the iPhone 7 are not water resistant and will be severely damaged or even destroyed if they come into contact with liquid. This includes even splashes!

What solutions are there for making your iPhone waterproof?

If you have a recent model that offers great water protection , you still need to be careful. Because water resistance is not a license to be careless with your device .

This is why it is strongly recommended not to:

  • Swimming or taking a bath with your iPhone

How to dry your iPhone?

Accidents happen sometimes, and it's possible that your iPhone could fall into water. While modern iPhones are highly water-resistant, it's essential to act quickly to avoid damage. Here are some practical tips to follow if this happens to you, to prevent damage and restore your phone to good condition.

  1. Act quickly : immediately retrieve your iPhone and turn it off to avoid a short circuit.
  2. Dry the exterior : Gently wipe the iPhone with a dry cloth, avoiding the buttons to prevent moisture from getting inside.
  3. Air dry : Place the iPhone in a well-ventilated area and let it air dry. Avoid using a hair dryer, as it can force moisture deeper into the device.
  4. Absorb moisture : Place the phone in a container filled with silica gel packets or uncooked rice for 24 to 48 hours to absorb any remaining moisture.
  5. Check operation : After making sure it is dry, turn it on and check its operation. If the problem persists, seek professional help.

Alternative method : Consider using a vacuum sealer to create a moisture-free environment. Place your iPhone in a vacuum bag and use the machine to remove the air, which can help remove moisture from the device. Leave it sealed for 24 to 48 hours before checking its functionality.

A word of advice: stay dry!
